General Notes:
When my Thomas and his elder brother were young boys of 7 or 8 years old, they were sent to an excellent preparatory school, situated in the beautiful village of Ovingham, on the banks of the Tyne - here a beautiful and romantic stream. Ovingham was about 12 miles from Newcastle, & when going home from their holidays the groom (John) would bring the two ponies belonging to the youngsters and then all three wouId ride home to my grandfather's house in Newcastle. After spending a few years, with profit and delight, at this school, the two brothers were sent to the Grammar School at Durham which had then a great reputation, having masters of exceptional tact and ability. At this school they remained until the time came for them to go to the University. Both boys displayed great ability and Industry, and became capital clerical scholars. He matriculated in February 1619 & commenced his residence at University College, Oxford, in October of the that year. He brought a reputation tor classical scholarship from Durham school, which he maintained throughout his University career. Author of the Traveller's Lay, and many other poetical pieces In June 1827 he paid a visit to Oxford, and took his M.A. degree. In 1626 he had become a Member of the Middle Temple - not with theintention of adopting the Law as a profession, but using the Inn of Court as a sort of Club, when in London and where he dined frequently in comany with old School & Collage friends, most of whom went to the Bar. 1
Thomas married Elizabeth Stewart Hay, daughter of David Hay and Unknown.
