General Notes:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eadwig_Ætheling Following the death of his elder brother Edmund Ironside, in November 1016, Eadwig was the main contender for the English throne, being the eldest surviving male member of the house of Wessex. However, unable to rally enough support amongst the English Ealdormen to repel the occupying Danish invaders, he submitted to their leader, Canute (son of Sweyn Forkbeard). Eadwig then recognised Canute as King of England under the terms of the peace treaty between Canute and Eadwig's brother (Edmund), agreed at the Isle of Olney, after the Battle of Ashingdon, Essex in October 1016. Eadwig was initially spared but, fearing treachery amongst the indigenous nobility, Canute ordered him executed, along with other Anglo-Saxon nobles in December 1017. Eadwig was buried at Tavistock Abbey in Devon. Following Eadwig's death the Anglo-Saxon claim to the English throne passed to his younger half brother Edward the Confessor.
