Charles the Bald[1] (13 June 823 \endash 6 October 877), Holy Roman Emperor (875\endash 877, as Charles II) and King of West Francia (840\endash 877, as Charles II, with the borders of his land defined by the Treaty of Verdun, 843), was the youngest son of the Emperor Louis the Pious by his second wife Judith.
Charles married Ermentrude of Orléans, daughter of Count Odo of Orléans I and Engeltrude, in 842. (Ermentrude of Orléans was born on 27 Sep 823 and died on 6 Oct 869.)
Charles next married Richilde of Provence, daughter of Bivin of Gorze and Richildis. (Richilde of Provence was born in 845 and died on 2 Jun 910.)
