bullet  General Notes:

James Edward was baptised in the Anglican Church of St James at Morpeth, which had been consecrated in 1837.
The town of Morpeth is named after Morpeth in the County of Northumberland in England. Morpeth, NSW and Morpeth, Northumberland are equal distances from Newcastle on Tyne (Northumberland) and Newcastle, NSW.
Morpeth was a private town from 1831 - 1841 and a toll of one penny per person and a halfpenny per wheel was levied on all travelers. The road from Maitland to Morpeth had been built by convicts.
Morpeth became the Hunter Valley's busiest port from the 1830's to the 1890's until the arrival of the Great Northern Railway.
During this time the town had eighteen inns, eight wharves from which thousands of newly arrived immigrants arrived to settle the Hunter Valley and New England areas, five Railway Stations, a flour mill, iron foundry and stores. Several of the old buildings remain and have been classified by the National Trust.
James moved to the northwest of NSW when a young man. He began working with the Postmaster General's Office in the Electric Telegraph Department on 1 April 1867 when he was 18.
He held the position of junior operator at Tamworth on a salary of 104 pounds per year.
On 1st March 1870 James transferred to Bendemeer, where his parents were living. His salary dropped to 52 pounds per year.
Later that year he took up the position of Telegraphic Station Master at Narrabri with a salary of 180 pounds.
