Following his father's nickname, William was nicknamed Lupellus (Little Wolf) which became Lupel and thence Lovel.

William married Matilda de Beaumont, daughter of Robert de Beaumont Earl Of Leicester, Count Of Meulan and Elizabeth de Vermandois.
