Newspapers New Zealand Herald 11 September 1917 (Papers Past) DOSE OF POISON. OF MARRIED WOMAN. OPENING OF THE INQUEST. An inquest was held yesterday by Mr. F V Framer, S.M., concerning the death of Margaret Davis, a married woman, who died at the hospital on Saturday night under circumstances suggesting poisoning. Chief-Detective McMahon represented the police. Dr. J. L. Will, house physician at the hospital, said when deceased was admitted to the institution at 8 p.m. on Saturday she was in state of collapse, and hor tongue and lips were stained. Remedies were applied to restore animation, but she died at 8.30 p.m. A postmortem showed that the stomach and gullet were stained, and the larynx was swollen. The other organs were normal. In his opinion death was duo to syncope, duo to some corrosive fluid. Spirits of salts would produce the condition he found. Deceased was unconscious, and unable to give any account of herself. To Mr. McMahon: A person might take spirits of nitre for a backache, mit the kidneys were quite healthy. A person would take spirits of nitre at a gulp, and anybody might not notice the burning of spirits of salts if taking it in the same way by mistake. It would not take much spirits of salts to produce the effects revealed by the post-mortem. Horace Davis, husband of the deceased, an assistant cable plumber, residing at Benson Road. Remuera, said his wife had complained of pains in the back for some time, and was taking sweet spirits of nitre. Witness was in the washhouse on Saturday about 7 run. His wife, daughter, and a Miss Hamilton wero in the kitchen. He heard a noise, the door opened, and his wife called "Daddy." When he reached her she was lying outside the door. Ho carried her into the kitchen, and asked what sho wanted, but she made no reply. Witness sent for a doctor, and Dr. McCormick arrived, and ordered her removal to the hospital.
