Description

Fred was easy going and was very popular with young ladies. Dulcie recalls"The girls thought Fred was terrific, he had lots of girlfriends."

He was tall, around 6'1" and he took great delight in tormenting his younger sister.

"Fred was the biggest torment because I was a lot littler, and he'd put his hand on my head and hit me with the other hand. He didn't hurt me. I'd write to him in New Guinea and say, 'I'm nearly tall enough to hold your head and give you a whack."

One of Fred's first jobs was driving a horse drawn cart delivering bread for the Co-operative Store, but he did not last very long. Fred thought hosing down the horse after they had finished their deliveries was cruel. He had an argument with someone about it and left. Fred was a roustabout, and he would travel around getting work where he could. He travelled up to Queensland quite a bit. If he was not able to find work and was broke, he'd send Walter a letter saying, "Can you send me some money, I'm coming home."
