• Emigrated: From London, England, 7 Mar 1849, Onehunga, Auckland. 15 on the ship Berhampore
The Berhampore weighed 653 tons. It sailed from Tilbury Fort on March 1849 and arrived in Auckland on 16/6/1849 after a journey of relative comfort.
The ship carried 80 Fencibles men, 67 women (some of who were nursing), and 101 children (there were 7 births on the journey).
---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------
The Berhampore was the seventh Fencible ship. Passengers were from London, the Midlands, and a few from Scotland and Ireland.
George is recorded in the War Office File 43-89 list of pensioners as being of the Marines and with a pension rate of £15/4/-. Name George Hotterway of Chatham district.
Captain T B Smith was a man of great kindness and foresight as he arranged delicacies for the nursing mothers as well as toys, concerts and entertainment for the passengers during the voyage. His awareness must have made this trip one of relative comfort compared to the rigours and deprivations suffered by those passengers who traveled on other Fencible ships.
