bullet  General Notes:

Jacob inherited Sunniside House on his father's death in 1779.
In 1815 Jacob moved to Selaby Hall near Gainford and let Sunniside House for a while to C.J. Thornhill. This was a short tenancy and in 1817 the house was let to Jonathan Backhouse of Darlington. However, in 1842 Backhouse left Sunniside House and moved to Ashburne House (today in Backhouse Park). Richard White, the brother of Andrew White, Sunderland's first Mayor, who lived nearby in Frederick Lodge, then occupied the mansion. In October 1845 the Backhouse family purchased Sunniside House and soon had it demolished but kept the old gardens as shrubbery.
Jacob Maude, was a country gentleman with an income of at least £15,030 a year.
He was a great sportsman and an enthusiastic hunting man, & used to be six hours a day in the saddle during the hunting season!
He was for many years Master of the South Durham pack of fox-hounds & when, owing to increasing age, he thought it best to resign - his neighbour, the Duke of Cleveland became Master. Selaby Park adjoined that of Raby Castle, the magnificent seat of the Duke of Cleveland. Mr. Maude and the Duke were on very intimate terms. The Royal Dukes, sons of George III, used often to be the guests of the Duke of Cleveland during the shooting, or hunting seasons.
