![]() King Alfonso of León and Castile VI the Brave (Bef 1040-1109) |
King Alfonso of León and Castile VI the Brave
![]()
King of León from 1065, King of Castile and de facto King of Galicia from 1072, and self-proclaimed "Emperor of all Spain". After the conquest of Toledo he was also self-proclaimed victoriosissimo rege in Toleto, et in Hispania et Gallecia. ![]() Alfonso married Agnes of Aquitaine, daughter of Duke William of Aquitaine VIII and Hildegarde of Burgundy, in 1069. (Agnes of Aquitaine died in 1097.)
In 1069, Agnes married Alfonso VI, king of León, his father having divided the kingdom into three realms upon his death. Alfonso and his brother Sancho of Castile would supplant their brother García in Galicia, but then in January 1072, Alfonso (and presumably Agnes) was forced to flee and Sancho took the entire realm of their father. Sancho was assassinated later that year and Alfonso returned, being crowned king of the reunited kingdom of their father in October 1072, at which time he also claimed to be "Emperor of all Spain". ![]() Alfonso next married Constance of Burgundy in 1079. (Constance of Burgundy was born on 8 May 1046 and died in 1093.)
The marriage of Constance and Alfonso initially faced papal opposition, apparently due to Constance's kinship with Agnes (both of them having connections to Burgundy). |
