bullet  Medical Notes:

Extracts from his medical report prepared for his discharge:
Strained back and enlarged testicle.
While in Gibraltar in May 1842, he received a severe strain in his back when attempting to mount a gun, for which he was some time under me.
In March 1844, when at Eastbourne, he first observed a swelling of his left testicle, accompanied by a severe pain. In as desired benefit from treatment he was sent to Woolwich where he continued in hospital 36 days. The enlargement of the testicle is harmful.
His back is such that he is unable to perform his duty. His disability has been caused by his military service

Opinion of the Principal Medical Officer Dec 1844
After a careful examination I am of opinion that Robert Millis is unfit for service and likely to be pensioned with dignity for military duty but that he is able to contribute something towards his livelihood

• Immigration: from London, England on the Berwick Castle, 13 Dec 1852, Auckland, New Zealand. 12 "The barque 'Berwick Castle', a small vessel of 342 tons under Captain Latto occupied 196 days in 1852 from the Downs to Auckland. She sailed on the 13th June, and brought out 148 passengers, including a large number of pensioners. Being under contract to visit the Falkland Islands she called there on the 11th August and while beating in, ran aboard the store ship 'Margaret' causing considerable damage to both vessels. the barque sailed from Port Stanley on the 1st October and for several days experienced nothing but gales, with snow and sleet. On the 21st October a heavy sea struck the rudder, carrying it clean away. The gale continued for eight days without a lull, and the barque was steered by means of a spar and a howser, but finding these too heavy, a temporary rudder was rigged with a guy lashed to the foot of it. With this the ship was carried all safe into Hpbart Town on the 6th November. Having shipped a new rudder, she sailed again on the 1st December, and had a pleasant run, making the New Zealand coast on the 9th, and arriving in Auckland on the 13th December 1852. During the voyage there were nine deaths and seven births."

The Berwick Castle carried 40 male pensioners, 37 females and 68 children.
Two of the deaths were men, the other seven were children.
